As living beings we are controlled and defined, in many ways, by our environment. Where an individual lives, and how they see and interact with the world around them shapes one's daily experiences with the world and other living things. Throughout history, there have been repeated states of war, depression, and discovery, all of which are constantly in flux and always occurring in some form and location on earth.
Why is it that the health of our environment is only recently starting to become a concern? We are in the midst of a world wide phenomena that many human beings have chosen to ignore or refute. Are the elderly among the skeptics? How does the prevention of natural disasters effect them, their children, or their children's children? Do humans have the capacity to care for their relatives that far removed?
Being a student who is passionate about protecting and preserving the environment, I know it is important to reach out to all groups of individuals and show how they are directly effected, positively and negatively, by the constant changes that have begun to increase with intensity. Although the earth's climate has been in constant flux for thousands of years, recent anthropogenic causes have heightened certain phenomena. One crucial turning point in this stable system was the industrial revolution. New inventions and novel agricultural practices started to increase the level of greenhouse gases emissions in our atmosphere, such as methane and carbon dioxide.
I have chosen to delve into the blogosphere in order to divulge the ways that age effects how individuals view environmental issues. After growing up during an era when technology and mass production were the new frontiers in American society, how have these individuals adapted to a nation that is striving to embrace a new 'green' way of life. I want to explore how elderly individuals have, or have not, changed the ways in which they view and respond to different environmental issues. Can individuals in a late age break throw-away habits practiced from childhood in order to preserve the natural world and its resources for future generations?
